A major thoroughfare for commerce and transportation arrived in Mount Jackson in 1830. The Valley Turnpike, also known as Route 11, formed the historic base for today’s Interstate 81. Today local, national, and international businesses call Mount Jackson home.
These highways have brought business and traffic and people through Mount Jackson for decades. Residents built churches, homes and businesses that now showcase striking examples of early American architectural styles: Victorian, Gothic, American Foursquare, Colonial Revival, and more. The National Register of Historic Places added the Town of Mount Jackson Historic District to its register in 1993, thanks to hours of research and effort by Mrs. Betty Burke and the Garden Club.
